Cadaqués, Girona
Lluís Clotet
The land we dealt with was considered part of an intensive urban zone and part of an extensive garden city. The main objective of the planning was landscape-oriented, considering the location of the complex and the environmental preconditions of the town of Cadaqués as key guiding factors for the shape. Our approach was that Cadaqués should strive to preserve its silhouette as much as possible, despite the inevitable peripheral constructions. From the sea, the town appeared to us as a compact white ensemble—capped at its highest point by the dominant volume of the Church—placed in an amphitheatre of dark retaining stone walls, which stepped up the mountains. To preserve this image, we were displeased by the proliferation of white villas scattered across the dark hills.
The grouping of all the buildings into a single ensemble—linked to the town's layout but closely following the guidelines of the retaining walls in horizontal strips—made it also possible to create generous green spaces.
