Barcelona
(Unrealized project)
I faced the typical geometrical challenge posed by the chamfers, which are the true protagonists of the Ensanche in Barcelona. In this case, it was aggravated by the fact that the plot could not open up to the block courtyard. It only had one facade.
The traditional solution –given the absurd regulation that requires direct ventilation of the staircase– was to resort to a miserable courtyard. Therefore, I was determined to ventilate all the units through the facade, thus creating a volumetry that highlighted the characteristic symmetry of the historical chamfers of the city. As with other projects from this period of building frenzy, just before construction was set to begin, the developer, Johnny Regàs, received an outrageous purchase offer for the plot that he could not resist. Johnny assured me that the buyer would respect our project, but that did not happen, as it never does.
Another frustrating experience. All our projects are thought to be built and used.
