The heritage value of the Colonia Güell is indisputable, and the pair of buildings we worked on were the best of the complex. The solid volume of the buildings, the correct proportion of the openings, and the orderly repetition of these openings granted the ensemble a dignity that deserved to be respected. For this reason, we proceeded with the complete restoration of the façades. The new metal carpentry replicates the geometry of the old wooden windows, but we painted them a bright vermilion. The interior naves were of great simplicity and beauty. The pillars were cast iron, and the structure of the flooring consisted of Oregon pine beams and mixed joists of great interest (with the wood working under compression and iron tie rods under tension). Because of this, despite the conflict with fire safety regulations, we decided to keep both the pillars and the joists exposed. The second issue with leaving these elements exposed was the need to route the necessary installations for the new use of those spaces. As we opposed hanging any installations from the ceiling, we solved the problem by creating a raised floor of sufficient height to allow for the passage not only of electrical, telephone, and computer cables, but also the air conditioning ducts. The generous height of those naves made this solution possible, and it also allowed the window sills to be positioned at a much more comfortable height for a person sitting inside. For the new and essential services—stairs, elevators, restrooms, etc.—we designed two new buildings placed at the center of the old ones. Contemporary, technological buildings, completely fireproof and isolated from the surroundings, with skylight illumination and a character in contrast to the original ones: for this reason, the staircases are made of steel and glass, and the enclosing walls are made of glazed brick in a bright blue color. The structure of an old exterior lift from the Tint Vell was repurposed as an emergency staircase.
