Black Moon was my contribution to the First Bilbao Jardín Garden Competition in 2007. About twenty small ephemeral gardens located in various spots around the city were designed for the event. In addition to the contestants, some well-known artists were invited to serve as judges. I remember Ouka Leele, Javier Mariscal, and the twin brothers Ailanto, Iñaki and Aitor Muñoz. I designed Black Moon with a particular focus on the enjoyment of the night. The succession of almost two meters tall columns, developed in close collaboration with the Cerabella company, was the element that illuminated, organized, and personalized the garden, situated at an avenue intersection. The pavement, the benches to rest and enjoy the view of the Ophigon japonicus—the color of the night vegetation, a night that became the true protagonist of the project. At dusk, the hollow wax columns were lit by seven thick candles that, at different heights, were ignited inside. Only a few sparks from hidden LEDs between the japonicus completed the scene.
