In 1996, the company Vilallonga Investments acquired the rights to the graphics Dalí had created for a collection of leather goods. When I was asked to design these pieces, I suggested that we should not limit ourselves to simply printing Dalínian patterns (a more than ironic reference to those of Louis Vuitton) onto conventional objects, but instead design surreal products inspired by the Master’s work. The collection would be called Dali Visions.
I tried to identify pictorial elements present in Dalí’s oeuvre that could be translated into leather. A recurring image in the painter's work was that of a little girl – the Carolineta – skipping rope. From this, I created, among other things, an attractive keychain in silver and leather. Very few of my unconventional designs were ever commercialised, as the producing company entered into a legal dispute with Fundació Gala-Salvador and finally lost the reproduction rights. A real shame.
