Artespaña
In the collection of Museu de les Arts Decoratives, Barcelona.
In the 1980s, Artespaña, a public company given over to promotion and sales of high quality craftwork, decided to enter the design sector so as to reinforce its repertoire and preserve certain craft processes. As a result, the Azimut collection, in which well-known designers and architects designed furniture incorporating craft elements, was launched in 1986.
The idea was to establish a collection harnessing the rich Spanish craftwork tradition, which seemed set to decline at that time. I designed a piece to hide the television set and other domestic appliances. When we did not need the TV screen, we could was shielded from view by a marquetry panel. In essence, the piece was a latter day bureau, designed to contain, not books, but the ever-present modern-day television set. As with any project dedicated to culture, the issue came to nothing.
