Eschenbach
The brief specified that we should base the decoration of the different plates on the Four Seasons.
The decor in the 4 plates represented the position of the Earth, as seen from the Sun, during the Summer and Winter Solstice and Spring and Autum Equinox.
Opposed to the almost fanatical regionalism characteristic of our moment in history, I intended to make a universal representation of the four seasons. The position of the Earth in each plate was not inscribed with the particular word of each season but with the specific date of season change. June 21st represents the summer solstice for the northern hemisphere but determines winter initiation for the southern one.
For this reason, the earthly planet is signified by the equator line, the tropic of Cancer and Capricorn and the Meridian lines, without reproducing the continents which evidently would have hidden half of the Earth. In addition, this subtle and geometrical representation of the globe did not come in conflict with the disposition of the food served. The main decoration, distributed at the plate rim, remained always on view.
