We designed it for my parents in the attic of a building by MBM. The primary goal of this project was to relate the small space on the upper floor to the lower floor. For this reason, we opened three skylights, covered with glass, which served as side tables above and illuminated the darker parts of the lower floor. The mirrors on the inner faces of these prisms reflected and multiplied spaces and objects that could not be seen directly.
The staircase, which we wanted to be spacious, entered the lower space with inevitable dominance. Therefore, we decided to transform it into a central piece of furniture capable of absorbing other functions: a desk, library, and my mother’s closet within it. Initially – as at that time we didn’t consider the limitations of age – the staircase-library had no handrails (photo in black and white). Later, we conceded and added some subtle safety rails on the higher steps (second color photo).
We mirrored my mother’s dressing room window with a female silhouette; this way, she could look at herself beautiful and well-lit.
