Entorno del Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

When the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium was still under construction, we had the opportunity to design its surroundings as well. While the building rose like a great fortress protecting the city – or like a lighthouse announcing it – the area surrounding it was envisioned as a dune garden, with craters that shielded the vegetation from the harsh marine wind. Just as island farmers have done for centuries, except here the protective structures are not circular but in pointed triangles facing the sea. In the center of this park, which marks the end of the Las Canteras promenade, a spherical cap alludes to the strategic geographical position of the Canary Islands and indicates the orientation and distance to the most important Atlantic ports of the three continents. In these gardens, a monument was placed in honour of Alfredo Kraus, for which we are not responsible for the authorship. Along the edge of the sea, we placed luminaires supported by sculptures of marine themes made from Corten steel.
