Lluís Clotet
In one project we embedded several thick glass panels, forming shelves, in a partition. The backlit effect was wonderful but the experience was difficult to repeat. For this reason, we tried to create transparent shelves - hyaline - cantilevered from existing walls. To do this, we designed a minimal profile that pinched the glass and hung from the wall. Initially we made it from bent steel sheet but then we discovered the possibility of extruding an aluminium profile. For us - and for BD - it was a transcendental discovery. From then on, aluminium extrusion was one of our specialties. The profile design also allowed the introduction of a thin fluorescent light or, later, a strip of LEDs.
The Hialina was one of our most plagiarised designs. In those years of trendy bars in Barcelona, there was no bottle rack behind the bar that was not made of illuminated Hialinas (many of them fraudulent).
As you can see in the photos, we had envisioned the Hypostyle as a minimal shelving unit to support bathroom objects, porcelain figurines and small books. The day we saw it at a friend's house, supporting a bulky Encyclopedia, we were frightened - since we could not guarantee the consistency of the supporting wall - and decided to design a shelving unit that would rest on the floor.
