Driade
In the summer of 2000, I attended as a guest lecturer the workshop under the direction of François Burkhardt, held in Meisenthal, a small town in Lorraine famous for the production of blown glass (Gallé himself developed part of his work in these workshops).
As other lecturers had done in previous years, I developed some ideas together with the master glassmakers of Meisenthal, and with Petr Novotný, the extraordinary Czech glassblower who made Borek Sipek's dreams come true. The most interesting of the prototypes developed on that occasion, this candleholder, was produced entirely by hand in Novotný's own workshop, near Prague.
A lily was the inspiration: the bleached petal envelops and protects the candle, recalling the central style of the flower, whose stigma at the end is the flame. The completely handcrafted production personalized each piece, with different nuances of color and texture.
