"The idea of forming a seat from a single sheet, appropriately cut and curved, assailed a number of architects in the course of the last century. I remember that Rietveld and de Breuer had a try, and above all, there was a prototype that Alvar Aalto developed in the thirties, taking advantage of the new technology of preformed plywood.

Revealing my deep admiration of the Finnish master, I too made some pieces in methacrylate sheet in 1970, at the start of my activity as a designer. Thirty years later I studied the “Sinuosa”, cutting and bending pieces of paper and plastic sheet.

While the project was being developed we became aware of the advantages of abandoning the idea of bending a single sheet and choosing instead an injection process, which would be more economical and would give us much more freedom regarding the geometry of the piece. Nonetheless, this freedom was used with great caution, because the further I got from the shape developed in the first prototypes, the more it lost clarity and cohesiveness.

The orthodox will complain that the shape does not reveal the production process, and I could only contest by saying that what it reveals is the design process."
